This is not necessary, and you can always join GC as an individual freelancer.

Linguists based in Germany are requested to fill out their tax numbers in the profile information. Anyone registered as a “small company” (Kleinunternehmer) that is exempt from the sales tax according to §19, is able to indicate this information on their profile and their invoices will be adjusted accordingly..
